Dual-mass flywheel is nothing more but a special type of flywheel. Its function is to collect kinetic energy from the engine. If the flywheel is damaged engine runs very unevenly, speed of engine alternately varies.
The compression stroke consumes a large amount of its energy during engine operation, which would normally cause a speed reduction. This is prevented by the flywheel or the dual mass flywheel.
However, the dual mass flywheel is a component that not only performs the above functions but is also responsible for suppressing torsional vibrations. Diesel engines generate much more vibration than petrol engines. Car manufacturers wanted to correct this disparity, and therefore developed dual mass flywheel. This ensures a high degree of refinement of the vehicle operation - vibrations are reduced to a minimum, no jerks during shifting and lower noise level.
The dual mass is comprised of primary mass, secondary mass, slide bearing, drive disc and cover.
