Show moreThe dual mass flywheel is a special type of flywheel. The flywheel is a part driven by the crankshaft that stores the kinetic energy of the engine. During engine operation, the compression cycle would tend to greatly slow down the piston stroke. It is the inertia provided by the flywheel that helps counteract this slowdown and achieve a much smoother engine operation.
The dual-mass flywheel prevents torsional vibrations. Diesel engines produce much more vibration than gasoline engines. To eliminate this difference, automobile manufacturers invented the dual mass engine. It ensures more comfortable use of the vehicle by avoiding vibrations, noise and jerky movements when changing gears.
The dual-mass flywheel consists of a primary and secondary mass, ball bearings, clutch discs, and a cover.
